Another number is up and this one belongs to a 14-year-old kid, Darren McGrady, who is after revenge for his brother, Travis’s murder. Reese ends up taking the boy under his wing and schooling him in the craftier ways to get even as opposed to just shooting them. Uncovering that the shooters are involved in something bigger, with corrupt police involved, they go looking for who is running the show. Which appears to be Andre, a local comic book store owner, although in a later meeting with a dirty cop he reveals the money is going to Brighton Beach – Elias’s territory.

In the meantime Will Ingram is digging further into his father’s work and Fusco tails Finch to where he is watching Will meet with Alicia, one of Finch and Nathan Ingram’s associates. She leaves almost as soon as she hears mention of Uncle Harold and tells Will to drop his investigations.

Reese takes care of Andre’s guys - leaving one (Brick – the guy who most likely killed Travis) naked in the back of a police car and the other held prisoner while Reese threatens to blowtorch Andre’s money. After finding out that the police have had to release Brick, Darren slips off on his own once again and Andre grabs him as a hostage. Carter and Fusco turn up in time for the shooting and Fosco cops one in the rear.

Will tells Finch he’s off to the Sudan after finding only dead ends in his search and Finch reassures him that Will was his father’s proudest achievement. Fusco reveals to Reese that Finch’s name was Harold Wren in school but that this was already a false identity.

Thoughts on the Episode

While I’m still itching to find out about Root or Elias, it was nice to see a softer side of Reese this episode, he seems almost playful with his cub sidekick. But as we’ve seen before in Nolan’s work with superheroes, while Reese could have joined the Justice League this episode and it all seemed fun and games, the darkness in Reese is always present.

It was entertaining seeing Carter and Fusco trying to come up with excuses for each other to cover their involvement with Reese and Finch but I don’t think they can keep this a secret from each other for too much longer.

Alicia’s reaction to Will’s questions sent a shiver down my spine and I’m hoping we see her pop up again in the coming weeks to expose information about Finch.

With the introduction of Root and the investigation into Finch’s background I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed that the show is leading us towards an arc that will hopefully end this season with a gripping cliffhanger and subsequently a second season.

What Did We Find Out?

  •  Finch had a fake name even in school? What is this guy running from? And does he have a larger scheme other than helping prevent crimes or is he just searching to atone for some unforgivable act?
  • While Will may have given up searching into ‘Uncle Harold’ Reese is not deterred so easily. Will he like what he digs up?
  • And how much more are we going to learn about Reese himself? With no flashbacks of Reese’s past this episode I’m eager to see more of his work before meeting Finch.

If you picked up anything else in the episode to hint at what’s to come, let us know below (but for those ahead overseas, please no spoilers).
